Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
