Tragic Update on UPS Incident: Fatalities Increases to 13

The number of lives lost due to the transport jet which ignited and crashed has now reached 13, per official statements.

Mayor's Remarks

Traveling to the Union’s memorial service, I received word of a 13th person that passed away as a consequence of the aircraft accident,” stated the city mayor in a online message. “My heart is with the relatives, companions and peers of all who were lost in this week’s calamity. We will get through this as one.”

Victims Confirmed

“Our thoughts reach out to all employee who has been touched and everyone in our community region – assisting you and making sure you receive the care and assistance you need is our main concern,” the organization’s statement stated.

Investigation Updates

Government authorities disclosed that the freight aircraft’s port side wing burst into flames and an engine detached soon after liftoff from the Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport, causing the jet to crash and erupt into a fireball.

The National Transportation Safety Board stated it is probing the aircraft’s service record, which was in Texas for fixes a period before the incident.

Flight tracking records showed the aircraft was on the runway in San Antonio, Texas from early September to mid-October.

“We are cognizant that this jet was located in the facility,” stated an investigator on the following day, without providing a specific date range. “We will review all elements of repairs that was completed, even the repair period, all the way to the date of the journey.”

Retrieval of Key Evidence

The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder were recovered, and the motor was discovered on the airfield.

The recorders – known as black boxes – were constructed to withstand accident forces and intense heat from infernos, and they seemed to be undamaged when discovered amid the wreckage. Investigators intend to examining data from the black boxes.

Jet’s last recorded information indicated an altitude of 475 feet and a rate of 210 mph ahead of the accident.

Maintenance Background

Based on aviation authority files from that date, a crack on a structural piece inside the center wing fuel tank required maintenance.

The company ST Engineering, which said it offers aircraft servicing for the company’s MD-11 and manages a maintenance center in that city, chose not to comment, but stated it would assist completely when investigators approached it.

Operations Resume

In the meantime, the hub activities resumed that evening with its overnight or evening procedure, official a representative said. The three landing strips at the airport were also open again.

The distribution hub in Louisville is the firm’s largest. The hub employs in excess of 20,000 individuals in the region, handles three hundred aircraft per day and processes over four hundred thousand parcels each hour.

Community Reaction

A candlelight vigil was held on the night of that date by the local Teamsters Union, which represents staff at the airfield, the firm’s primary freight center.

Teamsters Local 89, which represents employees, began the memorial with a quiet tribute at the evening hour, the rough hour of the incident two days earlier.

“This incident was so unexpected, so unforeseen,” the leader addressed the assembly of two hundred. “No one had a moment to bid farewell to each of those who we have lost.”
