On his initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Mayor

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these programs may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
