Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress After Deluge of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.
She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her pioneering work fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.
The team of pioneers also comprised experts in various fields.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
