The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home won't be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
