A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
